Regular readers will have noted that I like to give myself challenges to aid with keeping the motivation going in terms of finishing projects and making myself sit down and paint.

I saw this bingo board, on Rob Hawkins' Blog and thought it was a good idea.

Since this version of the bingo card purposefully moves away from painting alone to a more completist hobby focus, some of the challenges may be a bit OTT, in that I am not going to do much in the way of making a table. I just don't have the space. So maybe I'll fill in a couple of other options on those squares.

I am also going to make it that one mini cannot fill in more than one space. That would shorten the challenge somewhat, and that's not the point.

Here's to renewed hobby focus in the coming months.

Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191876898941079913.post-83169905636238179912018-01-15T21:49:00.000-05:002018-01-15T21:49:31.917-05:00Snow LeopardAfter the long hiatus that was last year, I have been re-energised by the winter break into getting the paints out.

This was helped along by at least 2 games of Frostgrave over the holidays with my eldest. She

In an attempt to equip ourselves for more varied gameplay at home as opposed to at a store, I picked up a couple of prepainted D&D minis, a panther and a bear, as well as a few odds of scatter scenery (more on that in a future post). Turns out, after googling for some pics of the original to post here, it was actually a limited edition Guenhwyvar miniature. I am not a big D&D fan, so really this means very little to me, other than it works as a big cat!

Photo not mine

The bear doesn't really need any work, but the panther was bought to be used as a Snow Leopard, so needed a little modification and a new coat of paint. I didn't take any WIP shots of the greenstuff job on this mini, but basically, I bulked up its shoulders and added some fur to its head, neck and tail.

So, with that, we have the Snow leopard:
I realise this is far from my best work, but the goal was to finish something, and this was painted in a very short time, is table ready, and the Big'un is pleased with it, so goal achieved. It'll take more than this mini for me to get back up to the standard where I was happy with my work last year, but baby-steps.

The Big'un has a wizard with the Animal Companion spell, and has been trying out the various options in her games, with the Snow Leopard being a favourite, and Ice Toad a close second, so I guess I'll be repainting the toad mini I have next.
Here's my top ten.

Ummm, ok. I guess that's it. *looks again* Yup. Those are the grand total of miniatures I finished painting last year. I still haven't even finished the base on the Brainwaster.

2017 was not a year for miniature painting. For one, the closure of my local gaming haunt meant I got out of the habit of getting regular games. I also have been getting my gaming fix by running through the Horror on the Orient Express for Call of Cthulhu.

So is that it for the year in review? Well, I did get a few games of Rogue Stars in over the summer. And I have been playing Widower's Wood and Frostgrave with the Big 'un. Including 2 games over the Christmas break.

For 2018, I'm not entirely sure I have my painting mojo back. Work has also been a factor, and I can't see that changing soon. I would like to try to get my hand back in. I'm close, as I have bought a few WhizKids prepainted minis, to use as beasts and wandering monsters for Frostgrave with the Big 'Un, so I'm hoping that will help.

That and getting back into blogging, as that was one of the reasons for starting this blog in the first place.

Here's to you all. May 2018 bring you all that you wish of it. May you reach all your painting goals, and may your dice roll well!Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191876898941079913.post-21701172458363853852017-08-31T10:04:00.002-04:002017-08-31T10:04:58.313-04:00Necromunda RebootOk, I'm going to let you all into a little secret. I have never played Necromunda.

I, along with my gaming buddies back in the day, all bought starter sets, but I don't think any of us ever bought the rules or played the game, we bought them as minis for SLA, and other related shenannigans.

I also have not played any GW games for a very, very long time.

However, I am tempted by this:

I have a whole host of Escher minis to use, and the new ones look kinda cool too!Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191876898941079913.post-65805675870215469382017-08-22T20:03:00.000-04:002017-08-22T20:03:15.518-04:00Minis looking for a good home

Do you like minis? Do you want more minis?

Do you like these minis?

I posted a few years back that I was given a full army of historical minis. The are beautiful, and they are painted, but I never use them, and I am in dreadful need of space. So, it is with a heavy heart that I am looking to offload these miniatures to whoever wants them.

The only catch is that you either come get them (which if you are in the Montreal area shouldn't be an issue) or you pay postage.

I will pack them up as best I can and post them anywhere on the planet. I will also give a quote before sending them, so you know exactly what you are going to pay.

This post in particular gives the background as to what they are and where they came from.

Please help me find a home for these minis, and give them a second life. They are just gathering dust, and I need to make space. I'll likely be posting similar posts with links to other minis and books I am having to sell for the same reason.
The Kev White Archangels are sush simple yet elegant sculpts. The minis were so successful that they were used in Urban War for a while too, before being replaced by (to my mind) inferior scuplts. For a great many years I did not paint them, as I didn't have the skill I to paint the wings in the way I knew I wanted to.

I finally bit the bullet, and painted one. My inspirational bird of reference was the Kingfisher.
With Oldhammer sites springing up all over the place. Frostgrave (and other Osprey games) inspiring gamers to get our their old lead, dust it off and put it on the table.

There is also a resurgence in old games taking on a new skin.

This post is where these two trends meet.

I am a writer for the Viridian Wars blog, which up till recently has been a once a year kind of thing, but I have been inspired to write few posts recently. Much of this inspiration has been due to me finding new uses for old minis that I love, which include a lot of the old Void range. I have ot, however, been getting in more games of Void 1.1. Nor have I found players in this city with which to do so. What I have been looking to play, however, is Rogue Stars, one of the afore mentioned Osprey games, and SLA CS1 a game from the second group which takes a much loved (cult?) RPG from the 90s, and remakes it as a modern skirmish game.

The melding of these forces has led to this.

This is me playing around with the filters on powerpoint to make a mash up of a recently painted figure from the Void VASA range of Militia, and pasting him on top of the original front cover of the SLA RPG. Of course, there are those amongst you who didn't need me to explain that, but for the younger readers, indulge me.

Here of course is the original artwork, and paint scheme inspiration for the figure, along with some better pics of the figure himself.
Of course, he is still to be based. but the painting is complete. I rather like the way the shading on the coat is based on the artwork, rather than the lighting as I would normally do.
I'll hold off on any commentary on how 2016 was in general, but here stick to a review of my painting for the year.

I'm not sure it was a particularly productive year, but there are some pieces I'm happy with. At least I have complete Frostgrave and Rogue Stars warbands.
I think the main reason for this is that I didn't really have any great images of them. Anyway, here they are, bad pics and all. All of these were made from scratch from my bits box, and a few other odds and ends. A couple (the scroll and book) were made from scratch from greenstuff.
There are 18 in all, enough for 3 tables of Frostgrave to run simultaneously. I'm particularly proud of the piles of gold. They were really easy, just a pile of sand, painted gold, with some glitter added for a real sparkle. Unfortunately, the glitter has mostly worn off with the rubbing against the sponge of my minis bag..Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191876898941079913.post-14112106871391735922017-01-04T00:01:00.000-05:002017-01-04T00:01:04.426-05:00Urban War: Oni Class Shogun Battlesuit with KatanaAfter completing my Triad Boss, and reading through Rogue Stars, I figured I really need some kind of Robot to go with my gang. To this end, I pulled this Oni Battlesuit out of storage. This is supposed to be a battlesuit, but looking at it, there's not much space for anyone but the smallest of pilots to go, so I'm calling it a Robot.
Pictured with the Triad boss here to give an idea of scale.

In the original Void 1.1, the Shogun was a battlesuit, armed with katana and shield, but of the many versions on the VASA battlesuits, I liked it the least. However in the Urban War iteration, this name was given to this melee orientated battkesuit, with some small range capabilities (there's a small gun in the battlesuits's mouth.

I'm not a fan of the back of the shield. It is really plain, which is unfortunate since you see most of the back of the shield after it has been attached to the miniature. I'm going to have to go back and do something with that.Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191876898941079913.post-35458470922498064142017-01-03T00:32:00.001-05:002017-01-03T00:47:52.452-05:00Cleaning out the Closet Part IV

I made a bit of an error when making the logo for this challenge to myself,in dating it 2016, when I had really meant this to be a winter 2016-17 challenge. However, with that in mind, here's the finally tally as we leave behind 2016, and head off into the future:

Frostgrave Ranger: Complete.

Dystopian Legions French Legionnaires: HMG complete, the Legionnaires and Lieutenant really are sitting on the shelf staring at me right now!

Urban War Triad Retainers: Complete.

Urban War Viridian Special Forces and Sniper: Complete.

Urban War Triad Boss: Complete.

Urban WarKabuki Doll: Complete

Urban War Sumotori: Nope, not yet.

Urban War Viridian HMG: Complete. All that was left was basing him to match the rest of his friends.

Menoth Army: Yeah, let's be realistic and leave this off the list and make it the next plan on the workbench after this challenge has finished. It really is a bigger job, and Warmachine 3rd ed isn't something I turned out to be playing much. Too many other games taking precedent

Effincool Halflings: Complete.

Reaper Halfling Rangers: Still mostly done, with only a couple hours to get them table ready.

So that's where the current state of affairs lies. Not a bad tally in the end, although I rushed off at the start and have faltered a little as the year petered out, I'm still happy with the results. Off into the New Year we go!

Hope you all have a great 2017. May it be everything 2016 was not.

Quick post to get this up there. I'm not sure if this is much use in any games I have planned, as it has two minis on the same base, but we'll see.Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191876898941079913.post-90547186634617760702016-12-31T01:10:00.002-05:002016-12-31T01:25:41.155-05:00Urban War Triad Boss

So after 2 hours at the pant table, give or take, I've squeaked out another of the minis I wanted to finish off for my Cleaning out the closet challenge for the end of the year. Ideally, I should have dropped the 2016 from the logo I made, as I had originally wanted this to be a winter event, but you live and learn.
This is the Triad Boss for Urban Mammoth's game Urban War. This was a limited edition release that came when you bought one of the original magazines that were the rules for the 1st Edition Urban War (issue number XX). He has his katana in hand, which I always thought a little cooler than the pistol wielding general release version.

In the end, I didn't paint over the cherry blossoms, as I previously planned to, but I do think they are looking a bit better than they were, if still not perfect. He also looks like he's leaning a little, which is kind of annoying, but is down to how he was placed on the scenic base I had already prepared. Good enough to get on the table at the head of a Triad gang for Rogue Stars for sure, though now I like the idea of fielding my Oni class Shogun battle-suit as a big ass robot to stomp on the other side. Either way, my growing Triad force has already gotten too large to be played as a Rogue Stars force, and will have to find another way to make it all on to the table at once.
I'll post a run down of what I have managed to complete for my challenge in the New year, but after finishing off this guy, I based up the last of the Viridians I had previously painted, leaving not so much to complete.

Anyway, Happy Hogmanay to you all, see you on the flipside!

In a final push to clean out the closet this year, I've decided to finish my Triad Boss. There's a bit of time left in the year, so I reckon I can do it, but here's a WIP in the meantime. I tried to freehand some cherry blossoms on his kimono, that didn't work, and will be painted over. Otherwise it just feels good to be getting on with this guy.
One of the antlers on his helmet broke, and I had to green stuff him a new one. I'm not particularly happy with the result, but with the paint on him, if you don't look too closely, it's not too bad. A couple of hours this evening should see him done, and based to match the rest of his troops. Then to stat them up for Rogue Stars.Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191876898941079913.post-32313649914027753842016-12-30T00:16:00.001-05:002016-12-30T00:16:28.155-05:00Treasure Markers/Objective MarkersThese were originally to be treasure markers for a Chronomancer and crew for Frostgrave, and they still might be, once I paint up that particular warband. They might also work as objective markers for other games. Does Rogue Stars need these kinds of things? To be honest with you, I haven't read through it yet, so I don't know. If it does, I'm ready!

I rattled through the bots box at my FLGS to get a few 40K things, and made them into random bits of tech. I particularly like the trapdoor, which I think is a tank turret door. The coiled rope in the bottom right is actually some string. They were quick to paint too, which is always good, especially as I was low on inspiration for the other models I know I want to finish.

I made a whole bunch of other treasure markers for Frostgrave, with a more canonical theme, but I don't think I ever got round to showing those. I should do that some time!

This is my planned gaming for the next few months.

To help me along with this scheme, I started an Osprey Wargames Montreal Group on Facebook, to try to build a local community of like minded gamers. So far it seems to be a success. We already have a growing Frostgrave group who are looking for a new campaign in the New Year, and there is much interest in Rogue Stars. I've also managed to find people interested in Black-Ops, Dragon Rampant and In Her Majesty's Name too.

The whole ethos of playing games with minis I already have appeals not only to my poor stretched wallet, but also allows me to play with so many of the beautiful minis I have that just don't get put down on the gaming table enough, if at all.

Of the three books here, I think finding an opponent for Chosen Men will be the hardest, as the historical gamers are few and far between from what I've seen. Still, I've had one nibble...

So my last post was a sneak peak, or hint as to what was coming next. Finally, after a break form the painting table, I finally got round to actually painting him.

Who's him you ask, well, Eddie of course!

This miniature was originally supposed to be part of the Pantheon of Chaos Kickstarter, but he didn't really fit in with the rest, so was sold as a pre-Kickstarter fundraiser. What a novel concept!

I didn't buy into the Kickstarter, as Chaos was never really my thing. But I couldn't pass up on this guy. Eddie and Iron maiden to me just remind me of a time back in the UK when I was playing GW games. So even if he is not really an Oldhammer mini, British Metal is so intertwined with so many themes that are Oldhammer, that he gets an honourary acceptance into the genre.

Now, where to use him. Maybe in my upcoming Frostgrave Chronomancer warband, as Time is on his side. Or Maybe as a cyborg for Rogue stars, or a serial Killer for CS1.
Of course, this is but one incarnation of Eddie. If I were to ask that another was made, well, then Eddie from the cover of the single 'The Trooper' has to be a shoe in (although I did find this conversion someone has done so I am clearly not alone).

So one month in, and I got off to a great start, then stalled as I got dragged in to watching the Walking Dead on Netflix. The minis are lacking, but I'm mostly through season 3 now! That being said, there are a few more paint jobs done, so here's the list as it currently stands.

Frostgrave Ranger: Complete.

Dystopian Legions French Legionnaires: HMG complete, the Legionnaires and Lieutenant to follow.

Urban War Triad Retainers: Complete.

Urban War Viridian Special Forces and Sniper: Complete.

Urban War Triad Boss: Watch this space.

Urban WarKabuki Doll: Complete

Urban War Sumotori: Not yet at the front of the queue.

Urban War Viridian HMG: I stuck some paint on this guy, but the base is not yet complete.

Menoth Army: This has moved down the list for a while. Likely I'll finish the rest then move on to this as the next project, as there's a fair number of minis to repair and finish.

Effincool Halflings: Complete. Ok these guys skipped up the list, but they were looking at me with big cute eyes!

Reaper Halfling Rangers: These guys got a bit of a work over with the other Halflings, but are not there yet. The cloaks look pretty though.

Will I be adding to this list? Yeah, already I got distracted by another mini, and some treasure tokens, so look out for them too!

Ok, so I was trying to hold off till I had more of these guys painted, but I have yet to get round to the rest, so I'll hold off on the big post, and get these pics out there. This is the HMG for the French Legionnaires for Dystopian Legions. I'm pretty happy with them. Let me know what you think.

These guys were a joy to paint. Full of character. The only change I had to make was change the flagpole for a brass rod, but that was super easy to do. I did think about more freehand on the flag, as it's a nice empty space, so if I'm inspired, I'll go back and add something there.

There's also a couple of cavalry figs and ponies that came with the Kickstarter, but they're not even assembled, as they are no use in Frostgrave, and I'm a long way from using these in any larger scale battle games. Unless I find some opponents to try out Dragon Rampant with.

In the new year, as well as starting off with Rogue Stars, I want to get back into Frostgrave too, and these'll be perfect for the bulk of the soldiers, and my captain.
It may not seem like it from my entries, but I have been painting. Not quite with the gusto of the first week of this challenge, but the nice thing is I didn't give myself a time limit, apart from 'this winter'.

I have a couple of posts ready to go, and this is the first of them. My Urban War Triad Kabuki Doll.
I'm pretty sure I've tried to finish painting her on three separate occasions over the 10-12 years she's been in my collection, but she's finally there. I think I might want to go back at some point and do something more interesting with the mask, but then the plain white look is kinda creepy too, so maybe not!

I am pretty happy with the hair. Painting black hair is something I am not good at, but this one looks okay from a distance!

She of course can be used in any upcoming Scifi games, and he base reflects this, but she could also be used in other time periods and eras due to the lack of hi-tech weaponry she carries. She would fit rather well into an Asian force for In Her Majesty's Name too.Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191876898941079913.post-36308931188450898282016-11-02T10:29:00.001-04:002016-11-02T11:04:32.074-04:00Rogue Stars Nickstarter now onlineThe eagerly awaited Rogue Stars took one step closer to being in the hands of gamers yesterday with the launch of the North Star Games Nickstarter for the book and miniature line. As a means of getting hold of the wonderful Mark Copplestone minis for this game at a discount rate, this is well worth it. Not so much for the human characters, but for the aliens and robots, which I think look really good. I'm also looking forward to painting some outlandish skin-tones on some of those alien models for fun!

My challenge to myself this winter is to clean up the huge backlog of minis I have to paint, finish painting or base properly. To this end I created the Cleaning out the Closet Challenge.

I quickly boshed together a logo for this too that you can see above, so if anyone wants to join in with this challenge, you are more than welcome. I find that one of the best things about the painting/gaming community is how these challenges to ourselves and others can act as inspiration to get things finished.

After quite a productive week of this challenge, the list is currently as follows:

Frostgrave Ranger: Complete.

Dystopian Legions French Legionnaires: HMG complete and will be posted soon, with the Legionnaires to follow.

Urban War Triad Retainers: Complete.

Urban War Viridian Special Forces and Sniper: Complete.

Urban War Triad Boss and Kabuki Doll: To be continued...

Urban War Sumotori: Not yet at the front of the queue.

Urban War Viridian HMG: I stuck some paint on this guy, but he is not yet complete.

Menoth Army: Ok, as this one approaches, I really will have to break it down into some component parts. That will be a post unto itself.

As winter moves on, I'll be sure to need to add to this list. I don't need to go deep into my closet to find things that are half painted and looking for some love. So, to continue the list and keep things rolling:

Effincool Halflings.

I backed the Effincool Kickstarter for Classic Oldhammer Halflings. They arrived quite quickly after the Kickstarter was funded, and I started painting them straight away, then I got sidetracked. I have since then backed the Midlam Miniatures Kickstarter for Halfling Wizards and Apprentices, so I suppose I'd better get one batch finished before starting another. This lot carries into the next...

Reaper Halfling Rangers

When I got the above Halflings in the post, I picked up a couple of Reaper ranger/thief type Halflings to go with them. Added to the Wizards mentioned above, it doesn't take a genius to see this all goes together to make a nice Warband for Frostgrave, or the startings of a Dragon Rampant army.Derekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541611128064822330noreply@blogger.com2
